Teen Esteem to Begin its 4th Year at TCHS
September starts a new year at Teen Esteem Health and Fitness at TrentonCentral High School. The all-girl gym-alternative class helps students maintain a healthy body to hopefully prevent heart disease, diabetes and depression later in life. "The girls really seem to enjoy the program. They aren't afraid to exercise when the boys aren't around" says Connie Kelley, lead teacher. WHF coordinates the curriculum with its partners and invites guest lecturers to present on specific topics like date rape, job interview skills, AIDS prevention, teen mental health, and how to locate funds to go to college. More than 400 students have completed the program. Outcome studies are being conducted, in colloration with stakeholders, including UMDNJ  Dietetic Internship Program, Rutgers University-Camden and Rutgers Extension Services.

Research Updates
More Women than Men Suffer Depression after a Heart Attack- impeding recovery - Findings confirm a longstanding view that physicians should be screening for depression when patients are undergoing treatment for heart events, and it also alerts medical professionals to the fact that depression is more common in women than men, and must be addressed.

Featured Recipe Book
WHF just release a new recipe book to support a healthy heart  and a healthy planet. You can order your copy of Go GREEN Recipe Book for Women
by visiting WHF's new online bookstore.
WHF applauds The HEART TRUTH for now investing in the clinical aspects that directly affect women's cardiac outcomes, fostering the Gender Care Initiative. Much work remains to be done, especially the  establishment of a wellness model - one that is accessible to all women.  Now that our government has established a clinical base of support through its Centers of Excellence for Women's Health, a formal partnership with collaboration needs to take place with institutes of higher learning - nursing and medical schools - to begin the work of synthesizing the gender care messages for medical and nursing text books. Only then will the practice of evidence-based gender-specific medicine become standard practice for all.  Take Care of Your Heart!
