WHF begins its 4th year at TCHS; School transitions to making TEEN ESTEEM an elective gym-alternative for 10th-grade Girls
WHF is excited to begin another school year at Trenton Central High School with more girls than ever enrolling in this highly successful program. WHF has updated the curriculum and established ongoing partners to co-administer the program. Partners include Rutgers Cooperative Extension Services, Rutgers University-Camden and UMDNJ Dietetic Internship Program. The University is completing data analysis on the 3rd year participants and is expected to release its final report this November, under the direction of Principal Investigator Dr. Kathleen Ashton. Funding support comes from the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, Princeton Area Community Foundation and the William Bryce Thompson Foundation. The intervention is an all-girl gym-alternative designed to reduce the risk of heart disease. Over 400 girls have graduated the program so far. The program touts a "zero" school dropout rate for three consecutive years, per enrollment records kept by lead teacher, Connie Kelley. The program will be featured at a Nov 2 Children's Health Summit in Morristown, NJ (see above) and will exhibit at the New Jersey School Board Convention in Atlantic City Oct 25 and 26, 2007.
